April 2007
The President’s Letter
Hello all! If you can believe it – summer is almost over!
Each year the Officers and Board of Governors develop key goals to ensure the
Dallas Chapter's success at fulfilling the needs of the members. At the top of
the list is a commitment to provide our members with 100+ hours of continuing
education throughout the year.
We plan to achieve that goal this year by offering the following:
- Three hours of CE at each Chapter meeting
- Eight hour seminar in the fall
- Annual Fraud Summit to benefit the Endorsed Internal Audit Program at
the University of Texas at Dallas
- Almost Free Seminar in June
Each month I will detail another goal and let you know what we are doing to
achieve that goal.
The Programs Committee has been busy developing the calendar for our Chapter
year! Our August meeting at Cityplace Conference Center will focus on
professional development. Our pre-meeting, “Successful Leadership Traits,” will
be presented by Paul Patterson with Tatum LLC.
We are also pleased to have Bryan Dodge join us for lunch. His presentation
“How to Build a Better You” will provide you with leadership and problem solving
tools necessary for success.
Please be sure to mark your calendar with the dates and locations of the
Chapter meetings through May 2008 as listed below:
- August 2nd at Cityplace
- September 6th at Eddie Deen’s
- October 4th at Cityplace
- November 1st at Cityplace
- December – No monthly meeting
- January 10th, 2008
- February 7th, 200
- March 6th, 2008

IIA Research Foundation
The Research Foundation has recently issued a book entitled
Conflict Management and Negotiation Skills for Internal Auditors.
It was written by Joan Pastor, PhD and represents the results of her
over 20 years working as a private consultant and trainer to the
audit profession. What started as a small program based on the best
research on conflict management and negotiation skills, has slowly
evolved into a book based on research on these two topics plus the
real life experiences of thousands of auditors who deal with
conflicts, potential conflicts and differing positions that need to
be united on a daily basis. The book is designed to give both
clarity into human nature as well as practical skills and
suggestions for dealing with people in a wide range of challenging
situations.
The goals for this book are two-fold:
- Increase your understanding of how people think and act
(including yourself); and,
- Give a number of tips, practices, suggestions, ideas and
skills that you may use appropriately to increase your
relationship and get better audit results with your customers
and clients, wherever they may reside.
The book can be ordered online at –
www.theiia.org/index.cfm?act=form.bookstore, or calling toll
free 1-877-867-4957. (Order number 1019, IIA member price - $75, non
