September 2014

photo_joemGreetings Dallas Chapter and welcome to the 2014-2015 chapter year!  We started out August with the Almost Free Seminar, at the University of Texas at Dallas, and it was a rousing success.  I hope that you have marked your calendar for our next meeting on September 4th at the Doubletree Campbell Center in Dallas.  The theme is “Hot Topics” and we have an interesting set of sessions and speakers for you.

Our pre-meeting session will feature a panel discussion, moderated by Courtenay Thompson (Courtenay Thompson & Associates), titled “Audit Experiences / Lessons from the Field.” Panelists will include Craig Davis (Equity Residential), Abe Paul (Kimberly Clark), David Price (CEC Entertainment), and Priya Sarjoo (Grant Thornton). The panel discussion will focus on learning from the experiences of others which is instructive and often less painful than personal experience.  Our panelists will share what has worked for them, their greatest audit successes, along with what has been frustrating.

Linh Truong, Director of Internal Audit at Kosmos Energy, will serve as our CAE spotlight speaker during the lunch meeting and will provide insight into the best practices, organizational structure and types of audits performed by an internal audit department within the oil/gas exploration and production industry.

Beth Hopkins, Diversity & Inclusiveness Leader of the Southwest Region at EY, will be our September lunch speaker. She will provide us with insights gleamed from the EY generational research study. EY includes generational differences among many of the cultural components related to building high performing teams.  The research is one way to better educate all professionals about “what is driving each generation.”

Our post-luncheon meeting will feature Richard Stohl, President of QBA Consulting Corporation.  Richard’s topic is “Keys to Success in Auditing Health Benefits” and he will provide an overview of the health benefits administration process and its related risks and exposures. The presentation will also provide key suggestions for internal auditors in evaluating the oversight within their organizations and how to audit their claims administrator’s controls.

In addition to our September meeting, please remember to register for our Chapter’s 3rd Annual Super Conference.  The event will take place on October 24th and it will feature IIA President and CEO Richard Chambers and former Dallas Cowboy and US Air Force Pilot Chad Hennings.  Additionally, the event includes 8 different tracks and 32 breakout sessions. If you want to save money, please take advantage of the early registration period, which ends on August 29th.  Don’t miss out on this outstanding event!  Go to http://dallasiia.org/super/ for more details.

Sincerely,
Joseph Mauriello
