October 2008
The President’s Letter
Chapter, your officers and committees are doing some
exciting things I would like to make you aware of.
First, I would like to announce our new CORE Audit Skills
Track (CAST). This is a two year program where we will
be offering meetings focused on core skills necessary for
auditors to be successful. These meetings will take
place as an option at the 10:30 am pre-meeting time slot,
starting this month. The first CAST meeting will
focus on the IIA Professional Practice Framework Standards
and will be presented by Lori Rainwater. I encourage
you to read the last sentence of her biography on our
website and attend this presentation.
In addition to the exciting CAST debut, we will also have
a strong October program. The lunch and post meetings
will feature Daniel Samson of Raytheon, as he will focus on
how to utilize the Sixth Sigma process to internal auditing
as well as discuss how Raytheon has applied this process in
their audit shop. Also, Greg Morris of E&Y Transaction
Advisory Services will be educating us on Fair Value
Accounting in our pre-meeting. This is an essential
topic for most of us to understand, as SFAS 157 became
effective starting last year. The Programs team was
not satisfied with these exciting developments in October,
so they have also booked William Biese of Deloitte to
present an all day seminar focused on IFRS, scheduled for
October 22nd. For now, you might want to save the
date, but stay tuned for more information about this event
in our next eNews.
After October, we have many more exciting developments in
store for you. In November, we will be having former
Dallas Mayor Laura Miller join us to discuss environmental
issues as part of our “Sustainability/Green Auditing” theme.
Then, in March, we will have current Mayor Tom Leppert speak
to our chapter about ethics. Two mayors in one year!
Also, the Chapter will be celebrating its 60th
anniversary at the February meeting. We are still in
the development stages of this event, but we are definitely
planning a special event that you won’t want to miss.
Be sure to save February 5th on your calendar.
So, Chapter, we are fired up about this year as we are
starting to see some great results from the work we are
putting in. We hope to get as many of you as possible
equally fired up and engaged. In the spirit of encouraging
meeting attendance, I want to remind everyone that we will
be giving away an iPod Touch, and your chances for winning
are enhanced each time you attend a monthly meeting.
Sincerely,
Jay Blanchard
2008-2009 President - Dallas Chapter IIA

The IIA Research Foundation
The
IIA Research Foundation has issued a report available for download
entitled Leveraging IT Controls to Improve IT Operating Performance.
This report studies how information technology (IT) controls impact
operational performance. The study is designed to provide
empirical data about which IT controls have the biggest impact on
operational performance, and about the effect of higher levels of IT
control process maturity. The study did not look at how IT
controls reduce risk, but instead focused on how IT controls that
are often mandated by regulatory requirements also improve
performance if implemented at sufficient levels of process maturity.
Each IT auditor needs to understand the risks and controls that are
resident within the audited IT environment as well as the process
maturity of the process being audited. This study provides the
auditor with powerful, quantified research that outlines the value
that these controls bring not only to mitigating the traditional IT
audit risks, but to improving the operating effectiveness of the IT
organization and improving its value to the organization as a whole.
As a result, the IT auditor is better enabled to be a valuable
partner to the enterprise.
The report can be downloaded free of charge from The IIA Web site at
www.theiia.org/research/research-reports/chronological-listing-research-reports;
however, a contribution is requested.
