eNews - October 2012
The
President’s Letter
Greetings Dallas Chapter! We started out September
with our first meeting of the 2012/2013 fiscal year at the
Doubletree Hilton near the Galleria and it was a success.
I hope that you have marked your calendar for our next
meeting on October 4th at Cityplace Tower. The theme
is “Disaster Recovery / Business Continuity” and we have an
interesting set of topics and speakers for you. Danny
Shaw, Southeast Practice Leader of Experis IT Risk Advisory
Services will serve as both the pre and lunch meeting
speaker. In the morning, he will be talking about
risks associated with using third party service providers
for your business continuity plan (BCP). The topic is
titled “Managing Third Party Risks”. As part of the
lunch meeting, Danny’s topic is “Business Continuity
Planning - Business Resiliency” where he will be covering
the importance of a BCP, how to develop a plan and what
technologies you should be evaluating when architecting or
implementing a BCP.
Our post-luncheon meeting will feature Tracy Carter,
Information Assurance Security Officer at Raytheon.
Her topic is “Are You Prepared for an IT Disaster?” and will
provide tips on how to recover from a major outage along
with guidance on how to perform a threat and business risk
assessment to assist in the development of your disaster
recovery plan.
Frank Caliri, VP of Internal Audit at Dean Foods Company,
will serve as our CAE spotlight speaker during the lunch
meeting and will provide insight into the best practices,
organizational structure and types of audits performed by an
internal audit department within the food and beverage
industry.
In addition to our regular meeting, the month of October
will be one of the most exciting times in our chapter’s
history. On October 29th, our chapter will be hosting
our largest one day conference. I’m happy to report
that we had a very positive response to our first discounted
registration period that ended August 31st. If you
want to save a lot of money for customized training and
access to 7 different tracks and 28 concurrent sessions,
then you need to register by September 30th. The cost
is only $300 for members; $400 for non-members. Don’t
miss out on this historical event! Go to

Lunch to start being served at 11:45
Registration begins at 11:30pm
Business Continuity Planning - Business Resiliency
Danny Shaw, Southeast Practice Leader, Experis IT Risk Advisory Services
Objectives: Business Continuity is not just a phase
or project to be implemented when time and resources allow. It
is an ongoing program implemented to protect data, and ensure the
integrity and security of the total business, facilities,
information and the well-being of employees, which is of paramount
importance.
Since 25% of all businesses never reopen after a disaster, are you
prepared for this scenario? Planning for an unthinkable disaster is
never a pleasant task -- but one that is a very necessary in today’s
business environment. Now more than ever, businesses are relying on
mission-critical systems to be up and running at all times. New
approaches to DR can make a huge difference in recovering data more
efficiently and in a useable form.
The purpose of this session is to provide answers to the following
questions:
- Answers to why is a business
continuity plan essential in protecting your company's most
critical assets?
- Uncovering how to plan for
your particular company (the right approach for building a
continuity capability for your company)?
- Identifying what technologies
should you be evaluating when architecting or implementing a
business continuity plan?

Managing Third Party Risks
Danny Shaw, Southeast Practice Leader, Experis IT Risk Advisory Services
Objectives: Organizations frequently rely upon 3rd
party service providers to deliver a wide variety of services and
other activities. While such arrangements may result in
activities being outsourced in their entirety, they do not relieve
the ‘hiring’ organizations of the responsibility for managing the
activities and identifying/controlling the risks associated with the
relationships especially during an outage.
The purpose of this session is to provide answers to the following
questions:
- Gain an
understanding of the potential risks that may arise from the use of
3rd party service providers during a BCP exercise
- Identify the basic elements of an effective 3rd party risk management
program during an outage

IIA
Research Foundation
The IIA has published Auditing Employee Management.
There are clear risks in administering employee management programs.
Numerous laws govern human resources (HR) administration, making
compliance a key concern. However, there is also a vital
strategic component of employee management. In today’s
environment, key issues include training employees in a struggling
economy, increases in fraud incidents, management/union relationship
strains, and the baby boomer exodus.
Auditing Employee Management is the final book in The IIA
Research Foundations’ Auditing Human Resources handbook series.
It offers practical information on:
- Risks
- Audit program development
- Employee performance management
- HR policies and procedures
- Safety and security
- Collective bargaining
The handbook closely follows the Society for Human Resource
Management (SHRM) Total Rewards Learning System regarding the
general body of knowledge for HR management. Included are
helpful appendices with key information on employment legislation,
employment-related websites, required employment postings, and
employee record retention requirements.
The book can be
ordered online at

(Item number 1096, IIA member price - $45.00, non-member price -

Center for Internal Auditing Excellence Beginning of the New School Year
The IAEP program at UT Dallas is now beginning its 10th year! Our
student organization continues to grow as we promote the internal
audit profession on campus. This new semester brings many new faces
and we are planning several social events so our members can get to
know each other.
Our schedule for this semester is entirely booked with companies
hosting a reception with our student organization. Our weekly
meetings are well attended with about 30-60 students at each
meeting.
We are also very excited about our two site visits. In September,
we visited the Dr. Pepper Snapple Group facilities and learned about
the audit group there. October we will be visiting the Southwest
Airlines audit group during the company’s Halloween party. We
participated last year and it was a lot of fun! These site visits
provide the students a great opportunity to network with
professionals and learn more about a company’s culture.
Our student organization also helps place students in internships
and full-time position in companies both in the DFW area and
nationwide. We have recently added job postings to our website in
addition to our online resume book. Both can be accessed at
www.utdallasiia.com.
If you are interested in recruiting on campus or assisting the
program in any way, please contact Mark Salamasick at 972-883-4729
or
mark.salamasick@utdallas.edu. We are always looking for
additional site visits and always welcome sponsors for our weekly
receptions. The resume book for this semester is now
available.
