Student Spotlight

Shraddha Deokar

Background: I was born and brought up in Pune, India where I earned my Bachelor’s degree with a major in Banking and Finance. After graduating, I had the opportunity to work with KPMG as a Risk Analyst for a year and half. This experience instilled a sense of professionalism in me and helped me create a strong base to build my career. I came to the United States in 2016 and obtained another undergraduate degree to gain an understanding of the accounting standards in the US. To put that knowledge to practice, I worked as an accountant at a CPA firm for a year prior to enrolling at UT Dallas to pursue my Master’s degree in Accounting.

Why Internal Audit?: During my prior experience as an accountant, I have been on the receiving end of an annual audit. I prepared all the documentation and was interviewed by the auditor regarding the processes in place. I was curious about auditing as a profession and decided to take the Internal Audit course when I joined UTD. As I started to learn in depth about the subject, I can say that it was the best decision I’ve made.

I discovered my passion for internal audit and I have continued to grow in the field ever since. Internal audit provides professionals an environment where they constantly learn about new processes from different areas in the business. Being from a finance background, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and explore the IT Audit space. This forced me to acquire the skill set required to conduct an IT audit. Another aspect that attracted me to this profession is that internal audit gives you a chance to contribute to the improvement of the organization. Being an active part of the UT Dallas IIA/ISACA/ACFE Student Chapter helped me broaden my network and has opened abundant opportunities.
