UT Dallas IIA Student Chapter – May 2021
After a full schedule of virtual chapter receptions and social events, the Student Chapter held its final chapter reception on April 28th. Thank you to the Crowe, RSM, Baker Tilly, 7-Eleven, EY, BDO, Lennox, Weaver, Focal Point, Grant Thornton, ORIX, and Schellman teams for speaking with the chapter members this semester. We look forward to meeting with our partnered employers in the fall.
We would also like to congratulate our Program Director, Joseph Mauriello, for receiving the OWLIE for Jindal Faculty of the Year! This award is presented to a faculty member for excellence in teaching, advising, mentoring, supporting students, and contributing to the enhancement of the learning experience for students in the Naveen Jindal School of Management. Thank you, Professor Mauriello, for your dedication to the internal audit program and its students!
Background: I am from Jiangxi, China and I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Financial Management from Jiangxi Science and Technology Normal University. Upon graduation, I had the opportunity to work for an organization as an Assistant Accountant, which allowed me to gain practical experience in accounting within the financial services industry. In 2018, I made the decision to pursue my graduate degree and enrolled at The University of Texas at Dallas for my Master’s in Accounting. After taking the IT Audit class with Professor Joseph Mauriello in the Fall 2020 semester, I became interested in the profession and the role that IT auditors have within an organization. To further expand my academic foundation, I decided to double major by enrolling into the M.S. Information Technology and Management program along with preparing for the CISA and CISSP certifications.
Why Internal Audit?: After speaking to my mentor, who had completed the IAEP program at UT Dallas, and several other professionals in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, I decided to enroll into the Internal Audit course. In hindsight, the opportunity to take the course was not only a challenge but also provided me with the chance to grow personally. The Internal Audit course provided me with a solid academic foundation in the profession while the UT Dallas IIA/ISACA/ACFE Student Chapter allowed me to develop my professional skills by meeting with individuals at different stages of their career. The concept of a profession that allows me the opportunity to add value to an organization motivates me to continue learning more about technology and the skills required so that one day I can become a successful IT auditor.
